Man who offered one day old infant for sacrifice stoned to death

Port Louis, Mauritius - A man who snatched a one day old infant from his sister-in-law's arms was yesterday stoned to death by a mob of angry villagers who were alarmed of the incident by screams coming from the mid-wife.

The man's wife was giving birth in their two room mud-thatched shack, with assistance from her sister at around 12 noon.

According to the mid-wife, who is also the mother's sister, the man walked into the room as soon as the baby was delivered and grabbed the blood-soaked infant from her arms then ran out of the home.

The mid-wife immediately started screaming and neighbors came out to find her crying hysterically and pointing at the disappearing father.

The villagers immediately followed the man and found him kneeling down, the infant between his legs and a knife raised high in the air, ready to strike.

One of the villagers immediately lunged at the man and wrestled the knife away while the mid-wife grabbed the one day old baby.

The man was stoned to death by the villagers. (Although offering sacrifices is illegal in Mauritius, some villages still follow the practice.)
